Natural divides

Its natural for your rabbit to use the environment it lives in to the best of its advantage to maximise its safety in gaining access to the things it needs. When you consider the various areas of fields, and hedge they would normally live in then think about your home you start to be able to see how your rabbit sees thing. One of the things that rabbits use to great advantage are divides between these areas and in hanging some floor length curtains across a window you are creating just such a divide which unfortunately you rabbit is naturally going to want to customise to maximise this advantage within its space. The resulting damage can be significant if left unchecked and its more them worth following some simple bunny proofing guidance to help prevent this.

Three quarter is best

Initially if you are going to go out and buy some new curtains its more then worth considering the three quarter length type as this in the most part solves the problem. If you already have curtains its also worth having them taken up to three quarter length, This can also be a good way of neatening up any damage that has already been done.

Ways to protect

Key to protect curtains that do fall within the reach of your rabbit is to understand why they are being damaged and treat the cause of the problem. In the most part what your bunny is doing is using them as a natural divide that provides cover so the damage you will typically find developing will consist of small areas where the cloth has been cut back to allow your bunny better access to pop in and out. Your not going to change this behaviour but a good way to help limit this damage is to prop up the curtain at the point which are becoming a focus of attention yourself. Anything can be used to do this from an aliment, piece of furniture to a cardboard tunnel or box opened at both ends. If you have wall to wall curtains move the ends away from the wall and if your curtains draw to the middle leave small a gap before one developed on its own

Reminders

Always provide some safe alternatives around the edge of the room to lure your rabbit away such as tubes or cardboard boxes and make sure that any cords or cables can be hooked up out of reach.
