Skirting boards and carpet

In this article we show you how to bunny proof your skirting boards & carpet, bunny proofing can prevent house rabbit damage from chewing & digging.

Tackling the problem

Skirting boards protect the walls of your home from knocks such as shoes or the hover but the soft wood is unlikely to resist damage from your bunny rabbit. Also the areas of carpet along side them is likely to become damaged and some bunny proofing is certainly recommended to prevent excessive ware from sharp teeth and claws. Its imposable to guard all the skirting board in your home but you will find problem areas developing and you can tackle the problem where it develops.

Where the problem stems from

Rabbit trail leading to burrow
Imagin the edges of your room as a hedge
Although you may pay little attention to the edges of your room, often tucked away under furniture or along corridors to your rabbit these areas are among some of the most important space in there environment. The edges of your room like the hedge rows of fields will be adopted and maintained vigorously by your bunny. It is important to appreciate there is a vast range of activities that take place in these places which in turn lead to the reasons they can sustain many types of damage from gnawing at the wood to digging up the carpet.

Good methods

Chew stoopa spreay on display
Remember to keep reapplying the spray
Bitter sprays can be used to put off chewing, these work especially well if you can provide safe more attractive alternatives. A good tip is to apply the spray to a cloth then wipe the liquid directly onto the areas affected. Remember to keep reapplying the bitter spray so it doesn't loose its effectiveness. Another good technique is to keep some spare ceramic tiles and lay these against the areas that are under attack. Your bunny may develop a habit of trying to dig up the carpet and similarly you can lay some tiles over these areas. Always provide an array of safe alternatives to distract your bunny, cardboard boxes, tubes, toss toys, wooden blocks can all be effective. Remember to replace these toys new ones to stop them being ignored. Some discipline can be used where appropriate and a water spray can be the best method of making damaging the skirting board a negative experience. Always use the mist setting as squirting can be dangerous.

Materials

If you are thinking about resurfacing an area of your home its more then worth thinking about having it tiled. This provides a complete solution to this problem as not only are the tiles around the edge of the room unlikely to be damaged by your rabbit but you can cut the boarder out of tiles to. This not only looks good but it also totally bunny proof.
