The danger

To a house rabbit plants are food and unfortunately many common house plants can be toxic so its important that some bunny proofing measures are taken to avoid any damage to your plants and danger to your bunny. The best way to approach this is to consider your plants a individual problem areas and look at improving safely to a sufficient level in each case.

In the balanced natural environment your rabbit would occupy in the wild it’s unlikely that poisoning is a problem. Most of the common plants are non toxic and the variety of food stuffs available means they are unlikely to be eaten in any great quantity. Unfortunately many of the exotic house plans we value for there unusual shape, colour and smell are by there very nature indicating they are poisonous and this coupled with a bored and hungry rabbit can be a lethal combination.

Toxic plants

There’s no magic list of plants that are safe but people do publish information about plats that are known to be toxic so its worth checking through some of these list against your plants and consider getting rid of any that are known to be dangerous or deadly. Out of reach

It sensible to make all your plants inaccessible by moving them to an areas that cannot be reached or by blocking them off behind a piece of furniture or wire fencing. This will stop the plant getting damaged from gnawing or the soil being disturbed by digging. Remember that falling leaves can also be a potential danger so always ensure that if they where to fall they would fall into an area that is also inaccessible.
